India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has appointed Mr William Walsh, popularly known as Willie Walsh, as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh is expected to join no later than August 3, 2026, following the conclusion of his tenure as Director General of IATA on July 31, 2026.

Walsh brings an extraordinary legacy to IndiGo. A former pilot turned global aviation powerhouse, his distinguished career spans CEO roles at Aer Lingus, British Airways, and IAG, the holding company behind Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, and Vueling, before leading IATA as Director General since 2021. He is widely regarded as one of the most impactful and enduring leaders in modern aviation history.
Vikram Singh Mehta, IndiGo’s Chairman, said: “His experience in managing large scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo.”
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director, added: “He brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise, and values driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth.”
In his new role, Walsh will oversee IndiGo’s overall strategic direction, strengthen operational performance, advance its commercial network, and elevate customer experience.
Walsh himself expressed enthusiasm: “IndiGo has a strong foundation, a compelling vision, and exceptional people. I look forward to building a culture of excellence, innovation, and sustainable value.”
With one of aviation’s most decorated leaders now at the helm, IndiGo’s next chapter is set to be its most ambitious yet.
