India-US trade agreement likely by March 2026, says V Anantha Nageswaran, highlighting strong Indian growth prospects for FY27.

India’s Chief Economic Advisor (CEA), V Anantha Nageswaran, indicated on 11 December 2025 that a formal trade agreement between India and the United States is likely to be concluded by March 2026.
The CEA’s comments, made to Bloomberg TV, follow a series of ongoing discussions aimed at reducing mutual trade barriers. He noted that the two nations have successfully resolved “most of their pending differences” regarding trade.
Additionally, Nageswaran offered an optimistic economic forecast, stating that India’s growth outlook for the financial year 2027 remains robust. He also assessed the rupee as being “undervalued relative to fundamentals.”
The statement comes after the Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, confirmed that bilateral trade talks were advancing, coinciding with a US delegation’s visit to New Delhi for negotiations.
This is the second visit by US officials since Washington imposed a 25 percent tariff, plus an additional penalty, on Indian exports in response to New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer recently acknowledged that India has put forth some of the most progressive proposals yet concerning the planned bilateral trade agreement.
