To strengthen drug quality and safety, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have implemented regulatory measures. Since December 2022, CDSCO, along with state regulators, has conducted risk-based inspections of 905 manufacturing units, leading to 694 regulatory actions, including production halts and license suspensions.
The government has also revised the Drugs Rules, 1945, mandating barcodes on drug packaging for enhanced traceability and requiring bioequivalence studies for certain oral drugs. Amendments to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, in 2008 introduced stringent penalties for spurious drugs, with some offenses made non-bailable.
To ensure regulatory compliance, the government has increased CDSCO staffing and initiated extensive training programs, training over 35,000 personnel since April 2023. Special courts have also been established for expedited drug-related cases.
