India and Maldives inaugurate major infrastructure projects in Addu, boosting regional development.
India and the Maldives have jointly inaugurated a series of critical infrastructure projects in Addu City, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the two nations. These projects, initiated during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, are part of an $80 million investment aimed at transforming Addu into a regional hub. The centerpiece of this initiative is the Addu reclamation and shore protection project, which saw the reclamation of 184 hectares of land earlier this year, expected to drive tourism and economic growth in the region.
Alongside the reclamation project, India is also funding the redevelopment of roads and drainage systems in Addu with a $70 million investment. This includes the construction of the Addu-Detour link road, which is set to improve connectivity and logistical efficiency within the atoll. Another key project is the redevelopment of Gan International Airport, aimed at enhancing Addu’s connectivity both domestically and internationally.
India’s commitment to Addu’s development is further underscored by its portfolio of 65 ongoing projects across the Maldives, with 12 in Addu alone. With five already completed, India has invested approximately $220 million in the region, reinforcing the strong bilateral ties and shared vision for regional progress.
