Government boosts EV charging infrastructure with ₹2,839 crore under FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE schemes for nationwide expansion.
India is accelerating the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations with significant investments under two key initiatives. The FAME-II scheme has allocated ₹839 crore for setting up public EV charging stations (EVPCS), while the PM E-DRIVE scheme has earmarked ₹2,000 crore to expand EVPCS across both urban and rural areas.
The Ministry of Power introduced the “Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024” on September 17, 2024. These guidelines promote public-private partnerships and simplify the process by designating EV charging station setup as a de-licensed activity.
To drive innovation, the government is supporting EV-related research and development (R&D). The PLI ACC scheme allows R&D expenses to be counted as eligible investments, while the Capital Goods scheme covers up to 80% of R&D project costs in premier institutions like IITs and IISc. These initiatives aim to strengthen India’s EV ecosystem and encourage industry participation.
