Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is poised to see its latest runway, 29R/11L, become operational for landings starting September 7, strategically aligning with the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to commence on September 8. The runway, commissioned on July 14, 2023, has been exclusively utilised for take-offs, awaiting the activation of its instrument landing system (ILS) since its inauguration.
The ILS equipment from Russia, acquired in May, encountered calibration challenges, now being addressed by a team of Russian engineers on-site. Pending the successful calibration and testing, the 29R runway will enable both take-offs and landings. This development bears significance as global leaders, including US President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping, are expected to land for the G20 Summit.
