RCS-UDAN boosts air connectivity with ₹3,985 crore for regional airport upgrades since 2017.
The RCS-UDAN scheme continues to revolutionise regional air connectivity in India, with the government allocating ₹3,985.22 crore for airport development from 2017 to 2024. This funding aims to enhance infrastructure in underserved regions, ensuring affordable air travel under the “Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik” initiative.
As of 2021, the scheme operationalised 609 routes and connected 86 airports, including water aerodromes and heliports. However, challenges remain, with eight airports becoming non-operational due to aircraft constraints, infrastructure upgrades, and limited operator interest. The government plans to address these issues by including such airports in future bidding rounds.
A proposal to extend the scheme is under consideration, aiming to improve route sustainability through extended Viability Gap Funding. The initiative supports local economies, facilitates business travel, and encourages tourism in remote areas. With ongoing infrastructure investments and an emphasis on long-term connectivity, the RCS-UDAN scheme is poised to bridge India’s urban-rural divide in aviation.
