The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) has signed a noteworthy Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong, officially inaugurating India’s inaugural Gati Shakti Research Chair.
The Gati Shakti Research Chair, a pioneering initiative, seeks to advance knowledge on multimodal logistics development strategies in the North-Eastern region (NER). By fostering collaboration with global experts, the chair aims to strengthen links between research and capacity-building activities in multimodal logistics with key stakeholders, including the logistics industry, government bodies, local authorities, and other partners.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasised the Northeast’s potential to lead in research, development, and capacity building in multimodal logistics. The establishment of the chair at IIM Shillong is expected to provide students with opportunities to hone their skills and build careers in logistics.
A strategic round table convened at the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis, IIM, to discuss multimodal logistics development strategies for connecting the NER to national and international regions, aligning with the National Logistic Mission. Sonowal highlighted the region’s infrastructural advancements, digital connectivity, and economic growth, crediting the Modi government’s substantial investments.
The Gati Shakti Chair aims to enhance collaboration between the government and academia, promoting high-quality research in integrated, multi-modal logistics, and supply chain resilience. The initiative will also play a crucial role in capacitating students and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the NER to leverage initiatives like the PM Gati Shakti National Masterplan, National Logistics Policy, and the Unified Logistics Interface Platform.
