The Indian Army has formally inducted bio-diesel into its fuel supply chain, enhancing energy resilience and reducing carbon emissions.

On December 8, the Indian Army made a significant move towards clean energy by switching to “biodiesel,” an environmentally benign fuel substitute.
The Army has officially included “biodiesel” in its fuel delivery chain. The first shipment of this gasoline was flagged in Delhi by Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS).
The Army Service Corps’ 265ᵗʰ Corps Day fell on the same day as the historic initiative’s inaugural ceremony. The Quartermaster General, Director General of Supply and Transport, and Shubhankar Sen, Director (Marketing), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), were among the senior Army officials present.
According to Bharat Petroleum, biodiesel is a non-toxic, renewable, biodegradable, energy-efficient fuel made from animal fat, discarded cooking oil, and non-edible vegetable oils. Diesel fuel made from petroleum is being replaced by it.
A significant move towards fuel options that would result in “reduced carbon emissions and strengthen long-term energy resilience” was made. Because an alternative, sustainable fuel strengthens the Army’s energy security, long-term energy resilience can be anticipated.
The Indian Army’s “extensive mobility requirements will have a significant and lasting impact on both operational efficiency and environmental stewardship,” according to VCOAS.
Additionally, biodiesel is consistent with the goal of “a greener, more energy-secure future” as stated in “Government of India’s Green Initiatives and the National Biofuel Policy” The environmentally friendly fuel further demonstrates the Army’s dedication to incorporating eco-friendly practices into its operational and logistical frameworks. Similarly, the “Indian Army adopted E-20 Petrol with effect from 1ˢᵗ December 2025” to boost its green mobility initiatives.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation was praised by VCOAS “for its support and collaboration.” He said that the project “will contribute significantly to the nation’s clean energy goals” and represents “a shared vision for a greener, more energy-secure future.”
