Ajai Chowdhry, a key figure in the Electronics Products Innovation Consortium and Co-Founder of HCL, urges India to revamp its air logistics for electronics and telecom manufacturing. While the country aspires to become a hub for electronics and semiconductor production, Chowdhry identifies critical deficiencies in both inward and outward logistics, hindering the realisation of this goal.
Expressing concerns over the lack of ease of doing business, Chowdhry points out the necessity for efficient logistics to support local manufacturing. He draws attention to the example set by Taiwan and Vietnam, emphasising the importance of fast and frictionless transportation of components.
Chowdhry stresses that the speed required in electronics manufacturing demands a logistics pace similar to that of Taiwan and Vietnam, where components are received, assembled into products, and shipped out within a day. He emphasises the crucial role of air cargo, highlighting that 80 to 90 percent of electronics component logistics rely on air transport.
Participating in NITI Aayog’s program for electronics, telecom, and auto, Chowdhry advocates for India’s integration into the global value chain. He underscores the urgent need for the government’s attention to logistics, proposing the establishment of component warehouses in key manufacturing hubs like Noida, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Until comprehensive progress is made on inward and outward logistics, Chowdhry suggests building warehouses at these strategic locations to expedite electronics manufacturing in the country.
