India’s logistics sector is undergoing a major transformation, driven by cutting-edge technology, sustainable practices, and strategic infrastructure development. As the nation strengthens its global trade position, initiatives like the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and the National Logistics Policy (NLP) 2022 are playing a crucial role in optimising supply chains and enhancing efficiency.
The PM Gati Shakti initiative is streamlining multi-modal connectivity by integrating road, rail, air, and waterways under a unified framework. This approach is reducing transportation bottlenecks, improving cargo movement, and cutting logistics costs. Meanwhile, the NLP 2022 aims to position India among the top 25 countries in the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) by reducing logistics costs, promoting digitisation, and enhancing real-time supply chain visibility.
Sustainability is also becoming a defining factor in logistics. GreenLine Mobility Solutions, in partnership with Flipkart, has introduced liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks, marking a shift towards cleaner freight transport. Additionally, the government’s ₹109 billion incentive scheme is accelerating the adoption of electric trucks and buses, further supporting India’s green logistics ambitions.
The private sector is playing a vital role in this transformation. Companies like IndoSpace are making significant investments in industrial parks and modern warehousing facilities, particularly in Tier 2 and 3 cities. The Indian warehousing market, valued at $16.4 billion in 2023, is projected to more than double to $37 billion by 2032, reflecting rapid expansion.
