Central Railway launches India’s first 10 MWp floating solar plant in Igatpuri, advancing its green energy goals.
Central Railway has installed a groundbreaking 10 MWp floating solar plant in Igatpuri Lake, marking the Indian Railways’ first such initiative. Senior officials highlighted the project as part of the railways’ commitment to renewable energy, including solar and wind resources, enhancing passenger amenities, and contributing to a “green Earth.”
In pursuit of zero carbon emissions by 2030, Central Railway has already commissioned 12.05 MWp of rooftop solar plants at railway stations and buildings, including 4 MWp added last year. These efforts saved ₹4.62 crore in 2023-24 and reduced carbon footprints by 6,594.81 MT. An additional 7 MWp solar plant is planned for this year.
Currently, 56.4 MW of wind and 61 MW of solar energy are utilised. Agreements for 325 MW of round-the-clock solar and wind energy have been signed, with 180 MW of solar and 50 MW of wind expected this fiscal year. These measures equate to the benefits of saving 2.5 lakh trees.
With monthly power consumption at 236.92 million units for traction and 9.7 million for non-traction, Central Railway aims for 70 percent green traction energy. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has awarded “Shunya-Plus” and “Shunya” labels to Central Railway buildings, reflecting their commitment to energy efficiency and environmental conservation.
