Sakshi Gupta, Country Manager, India, Air Logistics Group, shares her logistics journey in an exclusive interview. She discusses overcoming obstacles, promoting diversity, and supporting gender equality, highlighting mentorship and digital adoption to enhance inclusivity in the industry.
To all strong women, I always say, “May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”
What inspired your logistics journey, and how did it unfold?
I describe myself as an “accidental but ardent logistician,” having entered logistics through a serendipitous event that felt divinely guided. Quickly, the cargo world captivated me, turning my journey into an exhilarating adventure of overcoming challenges and celebrating victories. I hold myself to high standards, focusing on self-improvement over competing with others. Mentorship has been crucial, offering guidance like a sherpa, making no summit unreachable. With trust in my mentors and fueled by motivation, resilience, passion, and perseverance, I’ve aimed to transcend the ordinary, eager to expand my horizons and continuously enhance my expertise in logistics.
Can you discuss your challenges and how you attained your position?
The journey has been challenging yet fulfilling and exciting. Starting with small steps, understanding the basics, and managing daily operations meticulously was crucial before aiming for the summit in this competitive field. There are no strict rules; only a hunger to learn is essential, I’d say.
In your role, how do you perceive the evolving digital landscape of logistics in India?
Since the turbulent times of COVID-19, IoT has emerged as a beacon of hope for India’s air cargo, connecting freight and people globally. Technology brings change, automating the air cargo ecosystem with stars of transparency and efficiency. It’s imperative for entities to incorporate cutting-edge technology to stay competitive globally and meet customer demands. As India aims for global logistics prominence amid e-commerce growth, technology becomes the people’s compass, guiding progress.
What role can diversity play in enhancing the industry’s innovation and growth?
I truly believe that we’ve progressed globally to foster inclusive workplaces where gender doesn’t define roles; it’s about the collective cargo community. Embracing diversity and gender equality throughout ensures a harmonious workplace, boosting performance. Women bring vital attributes like rational thinking and empathy, crucial for navigating today’s challenges. Diversity enriches diverse perspectives and experiences, leading to innovative solutions and more efficient approaches.
What changes do you foresee for fostering gender equality in Indian logistics?
In the logistics realm, women are a vital component. India’s logistics sector is on the brink of significant transformation, particularly in terms of gender equality. Skill development programs, championed by industry veterans, target areas like warehousing and logistics management. Empowering women with technical skills levels the playing field, allowing them to compete effectively. The career trajectory of women in logistics has shifted, with many flourishing professionally and ascending to leadership roles globally.
What advice do you have for women aspiring to work in logistics?
To aspiring women, I urge: Logistics awaits your talent and determination. Embrace curiosity and grit, trusting your instincts. Wear your crown confidently amid the industry buzz. Let criticism refine you, and let humility drive your work. Seek mentors, connect with fellow women, and pass on the support.
