The recent heavy rains and Cyclone Michaung’s impact have caused severe disruptions at container freight stations (CFS) in Chennai and Thoothukudi. Around 30 CFSs in North Chennai and 16 in Thoothukudi faced extensive waterlogging and cargo damage.
Chennai port experienced congestion and delays in container evacuation due to the cyclonic aftermath. Power outages in Thoothukudi halted operations, and efforts are underway to restore normalcy. Terminal restrictions on vehicle movements worsened congestion. Initial estimates indicate potential losses exceeding ₹1,000 crore.
A comprehensive survey will assess the impact on the cargo sector once conditions stabilise. The disruptions continue to cause delays in truck movements from terminals to CFSs, compounding challenges in the container trade.
