Indian Railways launches 9000 HP locomotive to enhance freight haulage, reduce congestion, and lower logistics costs.

Indian Railways has rolled out its most powerful single-unit electric freight locomotive — a 9000 horsepower engine — from Dahod, Gujarat. This high-capacity locomotive is designed to streamline freight movement by replacing multiple lower-powered engines, significantly increasing haulage capacity on high-density routes.
Until now, freight trains typically operated with 4500 or 6000 HP locomotives, with 12,000 HP achieved by coupling two engines. The new Dahod-built locomotive offers a unified, energy-efficient alternative capable of hauling longer and heavier loads with fewer trips. This advancement is expected to ease congestion, enhance turnaround times, and reduce operational costs.

The engine is manufactured at a state-of-the-art facility set up in partnership with Siemens India. With 89% Indian-made components, the project aligns with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for World’ initiatives. The factory also supports local employment and uses green energy, reinforcing sustainable freight practices.
