2022 was the year of 5G smartphones, with the segment experiencing a massive surge in shipments. The premium (₹25,000 – 50,000) and super premium (₹50,000 – ₹1 Lakh) segments grew by 12 per cent and 41 per cent year-on-year, respectively. On the other hand, shipments of the affordable below-₹7,000 segment declined by 55 per cent year-on-year.
Samsung emerged as the leader with a 31% market share in the premium smartphone segment and over one crore 5G-enabled smartphone shipments. Overall, Xiaomi secured the top position among all smartphones with a 21 per cent market share, closely followed by Samsung (19 per cent) and Vivo (14 per cent).
Overall, India shipped around ₹1.65 lakh crores worth of 5G- enabled smartphones in 2022. Meanwhile, smartphone shipments declined by 8 per cent and mobile phone shipments by 17 per cent due to the tough market scenario in the year’s second half.
