Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels on January 18-19, 2025, marking their first in-person meeting after an introductory video conference in December 2024. The discussions aimed to advance the India-European Union strategic agenda in trade and investments.

Goyal outlined six key principles for a mutually beneficial partnership, emphasising shared democratic values and economic collaboration. He proposed integrating the $24 trillion combined market of India and the EU, fostering fair trade, simplifying barriers, and supporting small enterprises. The agenda also included aligning product standards, enhancing sustainable development efforts, and building resilient supply chains by reducing reliance on non-market economies.

Both leaders reviewed progress under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council and agreed on an expedited roadmap for a robust Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Senior officials from both sides attended the dialogue, ensuring continuous consultation to address global challenges and legacy issues.
